The Majesty of Kakadu – WIP
This is another painting inspired from my trip through the amazing Kakadu Wetlands. To view the play of light on the tranquil landscape was a wonderful experience. It is difficult to capture the feeling with the camera so interpreting my experience with paint and brush is very satisfying for me.
The resource image for this painting is early in the video, not the colours I ‘saw’ or felt. I loved how the water lilies flourished under this beautiful tree. Nature is so spectacular. I did hit a snag during the painting process though …..
Getting out of Trouble with an Acrylic Painting: To capture the distant haze in the landscape applied an acrylic glaze with a ratio of one tenth Titanium white. I was so happy with the result. In fact too happy – I decided to mix more glaze and add some as highlights on the foreground waves. I let it dry overnight – what disaster awaited me in the morning!
Fortunately, before I apply a glaze I always completely cover the painting with a layer of Binder Medium to ensure the area is safely sealed from opening previous paint layers. This is the first time I have been glad of the old, recommended habit. I was able to remove the offending stark white highlights with Atelier Unlocking Formula.
I applied the formulae and allowed a minute or two for the paint to soften, With the Binder sealing I was able to gently scrub the white and then wipe off with a damp rag.
The Problem? I had rushed it!! I had used too much white in my glaze mix, too large a brush, and too thick an application. It all looked out of place and dominated the image.
