The following video shows the steps of my painting process.
Below I have added a detailed video of my varnishing technique. These are the steps I have used for applying a Gamvar Satin Oil Varnish to a slightly textured acrylic painting on stretched canvas.
- Shake bottle as per manufacture’s instructions.
- Apply a light layer randomly to cover the surface thoroughly.
- Brush the total surface vertically.
- Brush the total surface horizontally.
- Repeat 3 & 4 if not looking evenly spread (not demonstrated).
- Brush very lightly to ‘whisper’ gentle strokes over the entire surface.
- Finally, an apply varnish to the sides using a similar technique with different directions of brush stroke.
The next 2 images are my inspiration resources, taken from a photo I took some years ago when walking through the beautiful Dandenong Ranges in Victoria. When I came to the stage to add the highlights the colour print showed little variations. So I printed a black and white copy and the highlights were better defined. I also took a black and white of the painting at this stage and reversed it to see any discrepancies that I needed to correct.
