Behind the Scenes
The walk to Standley Chasm is 1.2Km each way. It is safe and even and wheelchair accessible. Once at the chasm I wasn’t able enter because of the rough stoney surface. Traditionally known as Angkerle Atwatye it is owned and managed by the Western Arrernte people. We were so grateful to their sharing both this beautiful land and their knowledge.
Entering the area …. Breathtaking! Apologies, a low res phone zoom but hopefully you can feel the magic.
Creating the Artworks
These are the two photos I have used as my resources for these paintings. The whole area was just so alive and exciting. It’s a ‘must visit’ if you haven’t already been there. I’ve started with light coloured thin washes to establish my feel for the rockiness. Then built up the coloured layers, working from darks to lights. The bottom three images are two detail shots and a glimpse of the oil vanish finish.
