Crozzles for Devices

I remember when I worked in Aged Care a resident with mid-stage probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD) who rarely spoke during the years I worked with her. However, when playing Scrabble together she was a champion, still silent but using five and six letter words – and on one occasion a seven letter word! Another time I was speaking to a fellow AIN and accidently said a spoonerism. Another resident nearby who also rarely spoke started laughing, I said, ‘Isn’t that a word (and their name)?’, his quick and humoured reply was a loud ‘No!’.

These and other experiences were supported by my post-graduate research. Two important points for me were:

  • people with dementia enjoy word games and
  • people with AD may have difficulty verbalizing what it is they want to say.

Being a lover of word games myself, seeing residents’ responses to word games and the research meant that designing non-verbal automatic word games were a natural path for me to follow. The visual clues are presented for 4-5 seconds and the letters appear every 3 seconds to allow clients and residents time to spell aloud if they choose to do so.

The clues for Crozzles that depict a procedure are presented in order of the steps for that activity (e.g. ‘Making Pavlova’). Crozzles have always been popular on my DVDs. Here are some FREE CROZZLES created as MP4 videos for viewing on tablets, laptops or smart phones.
